Daniel Keyes began his college education with a B.A. in psychology. His parents were who really wanted him to get this degree. This degree, I can assume, helped Daniel Keyes to write "Flowers for Algernon", because of the Charlie's psychological issues. After this he worked at a newspaper, while in this job he tried to enhance his own writing career. This was not the beginning of his writing career though. Before he had this job, Daniel Keyes enjoyed writing, but his parents did not want him to make a career of it. He then received a masters degree in American Literature and English. While he worked for his degree in English, he was trying to be a teacher in New York City. While he was a teacher was when he go the idea for "Flowers for Algernon" Good Reads
Through out the story "Flowers for Algernon" the reader gets a chance to get to know Charlie, the protagonist. Charlie is tender an benevolent person that is unfortunately not shown the same affection. Charlie has a disability, he is not as smart as others. With an I.Q. of 68 people tend to ignore the fact that he is a human and has feelings. Along with wanting to show people that being different is not bad, Daniel Keyes wanted to help people understand the importance of the issue. The issue being that people were treated differently, because of their disabilities. One of the main reasons Daniel Keyes wanted to raise awareness was because of a student in the class he was teaching. He had wonder if this experiment could become a reality before this had happened. Since his parents had previously wanted him to be a doctor he looked further into it. Because of the growing awareness of the subject Daniel, wrote a novel about it. Daniel Keyes more than likely would compare himself to one of the doctors that helped Charlie through his change, during the experiment.
