Often many people do not understnad the importance of treating everyone equally, no matter what. In the emotional story of Flowers for Algernon any reader can begin to accept the different more easily. While I was reading this book, I began to understand how people that are differnt may feel. Charlie does not realize before the surgery, that people are always being sarcastic with him (progris riport 6th Mar 8 p11-12 ). I learned that society often puts people into groups. Society has more of impact on our thougts and feelings than most realize. In Charlie's progress report the reader continually sees that as Charlie becomes more intelligent, he is given many oppurtunities and poeple begin to pay attention to him(July 5 p 212). When I first started reading this book evryone said it was going to be sad, and having read part of the book before I believed them. However, when I started to the read the book it was not that sad. Almost eveyone that I asked that has read the book bagan to tear up. I olnly found two or three parts of the book even a little bit sad. The fact that Charlie went throug so much, didn't even make me sad. I thought of "Flowers for Algernon" was a true testament to all the obsticles that life can throw your way. Each simbolic peice of evidence, was not seen as a bad representation in my mind, but the oppurtunity to do something great with the certain situation. Charlie in this story goes through many trials and tribualtions to become the man he is, in the end of the book. Carlie unfortunatley looses most of his memories, which means he did not remeber a big part of his life. However in the end Carlie ended up being the person he was meant to be (nov 21 p 309-310)
If someone else were reading this story I figure that many would get a different message than I did. Most everyone can get that there are a ton of symbols in Flowers for Algernon. However, it is more likely that people will focus on the bad things that happen rather than the good that happens in the end. In the story Charlie wants to create a new life for himself after the surgey, he does this succesfully, but eventually becomes unhappy, but still accepting of his future. Charlie does what is needed to do in order for him to finally be okay with becoming less intelligent again. Charlie becomes happy again. He may not remember much, but he doesn't need to remeber everything to be as happy as he once was.
